Extend your stay: Catalan heritage, the Côte Vermeille and Roussillon wines

One more day after your meetings? Between the sea and the mountains, Perpignan is an ideal base for exploring French Catalonia. A few ideas with a chauffeur.

• The heart of Perpignan: the Castillet, a 14th-century brick gatehouse, houses the Catalan museum of popular arts and traditions. Further south, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca recalls that, in the late 13th century, the city was home to the court of the Kingdom of Majorca. The Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, in southern Gothic style, was consecrated in 1509.
• Visa pour l'Image: every year, from late August to mid-September, this international photojournalism festival puts on free exhibitions in the city's historic buildings. Demand is high then, so book early. In spring, the Sanch procession winds through the old town on Good Friday.
• Collioure and the Côte Vermeille, about 30 km away: the Château Royal, the bell tower by the water and the light that inspired Matisse and Derain. Further south, Port-Vendres and Banyuls-sur-Mer, where terraced vineyards run down to the sea.
• Roussillon wines: the sweet fortified wines of Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes, and the reds of Collioure and the Côtes du Roussillon. A day with the winemakers, with no need to drive.
• Villefranche-de-Conflent, about 50 km away: a town fortified by Vauban, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, and the starting point of the Yellow Train (Train Jaune) up to the Cerdagne.
• The Cité de Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, pairs well with the Salses fortress or the Cathar castles.
